Shingles Vaccination
Protect Yourself Against Shingles with the Shingrix Vaccine
Shingles is a painful viral infection caused by the same virus as chickenpox. If you’ve ever had chickenpox – and 97% of New Zealanders have – you’re at risk of developing shingles. As we age, our immune system naturally weakens, making it easier for shingles to emerge, especially during times of stress.
The Shingrix vaccine is the best way to protect yourself from shingles and its complications. It reduces the risk of infection and helps prevent long-term nerve pain known as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).
Who Can Get the Shingrix Vaccine?
Free for 12 months once you turn 65 – If you're eligible, speak to our pharmacists about your vaccination.
Recommended for adults 50 and over – While not funded for all patients, Shingrix is highly effective and available for private purchase.
Funded for some immunocompromised individuals – If you have a weakened immune system due to a medical condition or treatment, you may qualify for a free vaccine.
How the Vaccine Works
Two-dose schedule – Shingrix is given in two doses, with the second dose administered 2 to 6 months after the first.
Highly effective – Clinical studies show that Shingrix significantly reduces the risk of developing shingles and related complications.
What Are the Symptoms of Shingles?
Shingles typically starts with pain, itching, or tingling, followed by a red, blistering rash that forms along one side of the body. The rash can last two to five weeks and may lead to severe nerve pain, especially in older adults. Other symptoms may include headaches, fever, and fatigue.
